One of the most common questions I am asked is “what is the first thing I should do to start making money online?” A lot of people think the first thing they should do is get a web site. Then they will spend either a lot of time, or a lot of money (or both) creating a great site, just to feel frustrated because they are not making money. I know. I’ve done the same thing.

The trouble is, people who visit your site may only stay for a little while and may never come back. And how do you get them to your site anyway? The most important thing you can do is entice as many people as possible to give you permission to email them regularly. You can build a relationship then, and give them reasons to buy from you.

FACT: If You Don’t Have a List of People Who Have given you Permission To Email Them – You Don’t Have An Internet Business.

There are few different ways you can use to build your list but the easiest and fastest way I know (especially for people just starting out) is to take part in giveaway events

What Is A Giveaway Event?

Contributors (that’s you) each contribute a downloadable product on a topic that fits with the theme of the event (see below). When the Giveaway launches every contributor emails their mailing list (or at least their friends and colleagues if they don’t have a list yet). Thousands of people should visit the giveaway web site over the weeks the giveaway runs in order to get all the free gifts on offer.

How Does This Help You Build A List?

In order to download your gift the visitor must join your mailing list. You know they are your target market because they were attracted by your gift. You benefit from all the traffic sent to the site by the combined efforts of all contributors. The success of the event depends on team work. Every contributor must promote to their contacts.

What if You have No Product, No Web Site and No Mailing List?

To take part in a give away event you need the following:

1. A downloadable product to give away

2. A 3 page web site

4. A way of collecting email addresses
